The creator embarked on an ambitious journey to build the "Verified Startup Revenues" board, or "trustmr.com," in under 24 hours, subsequently generating over $20,000 and achieving $18,000 in monthly recurring revenue (MRR) within days. This project remarkably surpassed the revenue of 90% of the creator's other long-term side projects.
🚀 Concept & Creation: The genesis of the project stemmed from a tweet by prolific indie maker Peter Level, who highlighted the prevalent issue of individuals faking revenue screenshots for attention, undermining trust in the indie maker community. Motivated by a commitment to transparency, the creator leveraged AI assistance (using Cursor) to rapidly develop a platform that directly addressed this problem. The app's core functionality involved allowing startups to verify their revenue by securely connecting a read-only Stripe API key and their Twitter handle. Upon verification, users received a dedicated public page displaying authenticated revenue data and historical charts. A crucial search feature was also integrated, enabling users to independently confirm the legitimacy of shared revenue figures by looking up specific startups. The design emphasized extreme simplicity, featuring primarily a headline and a single button on its landing page, reflecting a "one feature" philosophy. The entire development process was completed in less than 24 hours, leading to an immediate launch.
đź’° Rapid Monetization: Initial promotion through a viral tweet, which garnered nearly 3 million views and significant traffic, sparked the platform's rapid ascent. Surprisingly, the initial version lacked direct monetization, instead subtly promoting the creator's other SaaS, Dataf Fast, via an embedded widget. However, recognizing the immense traffic and engagement, the creator swiftly introduced limited, rotating ad slots on the site. These ad spots were strategically capped at 20 to maintain their value to advertisers. The pricing strategy was aggressive and iterative: beginning at $299/month, the price quickly escalated to $699/month as demand surged, eventually stabilizing at $1,500/month per slot. This rapid monetization strategy resulted in over $20,000 generated within two to three days post-launch, securing an impressive $18,000 in MRR.
✨ Feature Iteration & Growth: Following the successful launch, the creator meticulously collected user feedback and suggestions, implementing new features in quick succession to enhance the platform's utility and engagement. Key additions included:
- Startup categorization, allowing users to search by types such as SaaS, courses, or marketplaces.
- A verifiable embed badge, enabling startups to display a dynamic image of their real-time revenue on their own websites, further promoting transparency.
- A dark mode feature, added in response to user requests despite the creator's initial reservations about its necessity.
- An interactive game where users could guess which of two verified startups had earned more revenue, which proved highly engaging and generated significant traffic. The platform gained substantial legitimacy and visibility as high-profile founders, including Sahil Lavingia of Gumroad, began adding their verified revenue figures, cementing trustmr.com as a credible source for startup revenue verification.
đź’ˇ Final Takeaways:
- Simplicity is Key: Design with a single, clear headline and one core feature to avoid overwhelming users and maximize engagement.
- Optimize OG Images: Treat open graph images for social media sharing as critical "packaging" or "thumbnails," significantly enhancing click-through rates and engagement.
- Context Matters: A compelling narrative or problem statement, like Peter Level's tweet, provides essential context that makes a solution more resonant and impactful.
- Just Keep Building: Entrepreneurial success often hinges on persistence, continuously making small bets, and increasing your odds through consistent effort, as it's challenging to predict which project will ultimately take off.
